Small group scene creation activities

Updated: May 20, 2021

Here are some of my favourite resources to inspire fantastic small group original scenes!

Small Group Scene Creation Activities

I really like small group scene creation activities. They encourage creative storytelling, improv skills, understanding of narrative, character development and performance skills. They also allow you to mix up student ability levels and allow students to rehearse and refine short original scenes. Here are some of my favourite resources to have your students create great short group scenes in drama.

(Note on these resources: Each drama / improv card set comes with prompt cards and suggestions for multiple drama games / activities. These are my favourite small group scene creation activities inspired by the prompt sets and they are also good scene creation activities with limited class time available and to suit varying skill levels in the classroom)

Theatre Games

These printable prompt cards are based on real life odd inventions. One of my favourites is 'odd advertisements' where in small groups, students create and perform an advertisement for an odd invention!

Theatre Games

These printable prompt cards include funny 'great escape' prompts. One of my favourite activities is 'great escapes' where in small groups, students create and perform a comedy scene based on the allocated prompt card.

Improv Scene Ideas

These printable prompt cards come with an opening line 'help' prompt. Students must use the line as the basis for a scene. Students can create these scenes quickly.

Improv Games for Teens

These printable prompt cards are based on made up character hobbies. One of my favourite small group scene creation activities is 'hobbies anonymous' where students

create a scene based on a support group for their hobbies.

Theatre Games

These printable prompt cards come with 2 suggested scenarios for students to create their own scene or they can come up with their own based on an allocated prop. A good any day scene creation activity.

Drama Character Cards Improv

Character Scenes

These are printable character cards and while these cards are useful for just about any improv game, one of my favourite activities is 'character scenes' where students are allocated a random character and create a scene including every one.

Improv Games

Probably my most popular group scene creation activity. In small groups, students create a scene with the dramatic death. Instructions for games are included in the resource but you can also find out how to play dramatic deaths HERE!

Improv Scene Ideas

These are printable location cards and while these cards are useful for just about any drama scene creation activity, one of my favourite activities is 'location shift' where students are allocated two locations and must incorporate both.

Fun Improv Games for Teens

A fun activity is 'save the world' where in small groups, students create a scene where retired superheroes come out of retirement to save the world. Also check out the small

group improv game Superheroes to the Rescue HERE!

Drama Games and Prompts for Kids

These are printable 'opening line' prompts and students must create a scene starting with the opening line. A very good quick scene creation activity.

Improv Games for Performance

These improv / theatre game prompt cards were designed to play with multiple improv games but can also be used to task students to come up with a short small group scene based on the 'animated objects' prompts. A great scene activity for interesting dialogue creation.

Funny Improv Scenarios

These improv / theatre game prompt cards were designed to play with multiple improv games but can also be used to task students to come up with a short small group scene based on the 'wacky events' prompts. These are really funny improv scenarios with a challenge being on narrative (how to structure the scene).

Funny Improv Acting Games Ideas

These improv / theatre game prompt cards were designed to play with multiple improv games but can also be used to task students to come up with a short small group scene based on the 'things that go wrong' prompts. These are good scene prompts for limited time.

Fun Improv Games and Scene Ideas

These improv / theatre game prompt cards were designed to play with multiple improv games but can also be used to task students to come up with a short small group scene based on the 'job mishaps' prompts. These are also good prompts for quick short scene creation.

Each Drama / Improv Card set from Drama Trunk comes with suggestions for multiple games and activities for use with each set. Combine multiple card sets for even more challenges and activities.

But there's more drama...

As well as more suggested games with all of these sets, I have even more sets of drama cards with more games, activities and prompts to use in heaps of drama, theatre and improv games and to help students create scenes. Find out why I created drama cards and how they transformed my drama classes here or check them out here.

Happy Drama Teaching!
