What is melodrama? Melodrama is an over-the-top, non-naturalistic acting / performance style where emotions are heightened and characters' characteristics are exaggerated. A classic melodrama theme is good vs. evil and classic melodrama characters include heroes, villains, victims and sidekicks.
Example melodrama cards included in this resource:
- Hero: Mr/Mrs Brave in any situation
- Victim: Easily Frightened Boy/Girl
- Villain: Dr Loves to Destroy Things
- Hero Sidekick: Too Nice Guy/Gal
- Villainous Plan: Make the Sky Green
Melodrama Script Extract
The victim, lady/sir cries-a-lot is tied to a large machine. The villain, Mr/Mrs Chuckles is busily running around the stage, pressing buttons and chuckling. The Villain stops and looks at the audience.
Villain (laughing and talking to the audience) Ha ha ha, my evil plan is
in motion. (Pointing to the machine behind them) Once I start this
super-huge-evil-computer-thing all of the smart phones will be
destroyed. (The villain bursts out laughing and then returns to
Victim (crying) You will never get away with this Mr/Mrs Chuckles.
Villain Who is going to stop me? And once I destroy all of the smart
phones no one will have GPS so no one will ever find me!
Victim Oh the horror!
